Like what you do more than do what you like
I was intrigued by the quote I found recently: “it’s more important in life to like what you do than do what you like” attributed to Dr. Felix Wroblewski of Cornell Medical College.
What does that really mean?
According to the gentleman that quoted him: "It's a recognition that lots of times, you don't really get a choice in life, so the important thing is to be able to like what you do as opposed to just assuming you didn't have a choice”. That made me think of the concept of Amor Fati.
When I asked Gemini to clarify the concept for me it gave this pretty good summary: "”Liking what you do" is about cultivating an attitude of engagement, finding meaning in the process, and developing a sense of purpose in your work, regardless of whether it perfectly aligns with a pre-conceived "dream job." It's about finding satisfaction in the journey, not just the destination.”
This might seem counterintuitive, but studies show that adults achieve flow states—those moments of intense focus and enjoyment—more readily in their work than during their leisure hours.
